Regina police believe they have found human remains tied to a 23-year-old missing persons case that recently resulted in a charge of first-degree murder.
On Friday, the Regina Police Service (RPS) issued a statement revealing human remains had been found that are believed to be those of Patrick Cyril Thauberger. The remains were discovered on Thursday by RPS and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service in an undisclosed location in “rural Saskatchewan.”
Police and the coroners service are continuing investigative and forensic work to confirm the remains are, in fact, those of Thauberger.
Thauberger was last seen in early September of 1997. He was reported missing to police on Sept. 16 of that year. Police have continued investigating in the ensuing years, with recent efforts leading to the arrest of Joseph Thauberger, 78, last Sunday.
Joseph, a Regina resident and Patrick Thauberger’s brother, was charged with first-degree murder and uttering threats.
RPS Chief Evan Bray said earlier this week that the case is proof that the service is always working to solve cold cases.
