A Grade 12 student in Regina wants to share her love of reading with the community by donating as many books as possible.
Cara Engbers has collected over 1000 books, as well as $1,000 in cash to buy more books before Christmas. She is then planning on donating all of them to grade one classes throughout the city.
“I’ve always liked reading. So for me, a big part of it was that I wanted to give kids more opportunities to read and enjoy,” Engbers said. “Enjoying reading leads to enjoying learning.
“I was hoping to get two books for each kid in one classroom but so many people have responded and now we can do at least three books per student.”
So far, Engbers plans on donating the books to Glen Elm, Coronation Park and Albert Schools in the city.
“It’s been absolutely amazing to see how many people have gotten behind this and it’s been so appreciated so far,” she said. “I know it will be appreciated by all the teachers and kids.”
Engbers says she loves reading and that it’s always been very important in her life, adding that it was really important to her growing up.
“I loved books by Eric Carle, Robert Munch and I’ve collected a whole bunch of Disney Classics and stuff like that,” she said. “I loved reading them growing up.”
If you’re interested in donating some books, you can drop them off at the Parliament Community Church between 9:00 a.m and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, Dec. 11.
