The Canadian Football League released its list of potential free agents for 2021.
The number is more than 300. Some teams have more free agents than they would have on their active roster on game day.
It’s also what I call Exhibit A for the reason it appears more and more fans are feeling less and less connected to their teams.
When you consistently had players spend five years or more for teams, it helped fan engagement. At least they’d feel comfortable buying a jersey with one of the current players’ names on the back.
Don Unamba is a perfect example. He’s an all-star-calibre linebacker who is on his sixth team in six years. He’s taking advantage of the ever-so-popular one-year deals and that’s his right.
If we’re looking at a new business model for the CFL, there needs to be a reward for teams who commit long term to players and players who commit long term to teams.
It would diminish so much roster turnover and allow fans to actually recognize the roster from one year to the next.
