Canada’s athlete of the year became athletes — plural — in a tied vote between soccer phenom Alphonso Davies and Super Bowl-champion offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.
Davies was a star for the Champions League winner with Bayern Munich and was named the second-best in the world at his position.
Soccer is such a global sport and we’ve never seen a Canadian receive such accolades for their play.
When you talk of the award for athlete of the year, Davies led the pack.
How did Duvernay-Tardif even the votes? He was a great human being. He helped the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl with only three games in January and February from the playoffs, so his on-field resume doesn’t match that of Davies.
Duvernay-Tardif opted out of his millions in salary to help during the COVID-19 pandemic as a trained medical doctor.
Remember, this is the athlete-of-the-year award. Duvernay-Tardif’s story is inspiring, no doubt. But he was not the best athlete in Canada in 2020. But he was one of our best people.
