Justin Trudeau isn’t the only one talking of a great economic reset in Canada. So too is the Canadian Football League.
As it gets set for the 2021 season, there are plenty of rumours running around on what is ahead for the CFL in terms of cost certainty.
This has started slowly under Randy Ambrosie already. Remember the Chris Jones era, when other teams tried to keep pace by hiring more and more football operations staff and the prices skyrocketed. The problem? The teams weren’t profitable, so in came that cap on personnel and salary.
The next in line to control spending are high-priced quarterbacks and offensive linemen.
While they all fall within the salary cap right now, it’s harder to make your league competitive to bring in players from the States when you almost have to pay them league minimum because those high-priced players are taking a bigger and bigger chunk of the pie.
So Bo Levi Mitchell, Mike Reilly and maybe even Cody Fajardo are going to have to feel the pinch as CFL teams reset the way they spend their money.
