As part of Saskatchewan’s latest COVID-19 measures, casinos and bingo halls will be required to close on Saturday.
“It’s fair to say that this is difficult news for everyone, especially as we head into the holiday season,” said Shanna Schulhauser, communications director for the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation.
However, Schulhauser reacted to the news saying it’s important to protect the health of visitors, employees and the broader community.
“Right now, we’re focused on making sure that we as a corporation are doing the right thing to support the response to this pandemic,” she said. “Central to that is listening to and acting on the direction of our chief medical health officer.”
Schulhauser noted one difference between this imminent closure and the one that occurred during the spring.
Subject to further review by public health officials, this one comes with an end date of Jan. 15.
“That makes planning and things like that much easier,” she said.
“Certainly when it comes to the revenue side of things, absolutely it’ll have an impact but being it’s early days … we haven’t had a chance to crunch the numbers or prepare any revenue projections.”
Since the first wave, Schulhauser has found casinos had reopened safely.
She said there have only been two occasions where they have been flagged for a COVID-19 exposure. One was at Casino Regina in October and, more recently, one was at Casino Moose Jaw.
“At the end of the day, our chief medical health officer knows best. And he is the individual we’ve been taking all of our cues from throughout this entire pandemic and we plan to continue with that,” Schulhauser said.
