Dwayne Haskins is another example of the theory that it’s not where you’re drafted but how you work when you show up on Day 1.
And for the most part, the first-round pick (15th overall) was a disappointment for the Washington Football Team, which was hoping Haskins would turn the team into a contender like Josh Allen has for Buffalo or Patrick Mahomes has done for Kansas City. Those two quarterbacks weren’t first overall picks but dedicated themselves to take their game to the next level.
Instead, Haskins has ended up like Johnny Manziel or Josh Rosen. Of course when you consistently let your team down by violating the league’s COVID protocols and you’re a captain, it’s going to cost you something.
Washington cut Haskins outright and nobody thinks it was a mistake.
Is Haskins’ career over? It’s too early to say but it’s all up to Haskins. So far he hasn’t taken his career seriously enough to be a professional.
Like J.J. Watt said in his viral rant over the weekend, pro football is a privilege — and Haskins has to earn whatever is next.
