The Regina city councillor behind a controversial motion that aimed to ban fossil fuel companies from advertising on city property has been fired from his day job.
Ward 6 Councillor Dan LeBlanc said he was let go from the Gerrand Rath Johnson LLP law firm, telling 980 CJME that there was no reason given for his termination.
“Essentially, employers in Saskatchewan have the legal ability to fire someone without cause,” he said. “When you fire someone without cause, you don’t have to explain yourself or give a reason and that’s what occurred here … It’s just sort of ‘We decided to terminate your employment,’ and that’s about it.”
When asked whether he believed the fossil fuel motion had anything to do with the firm’s decision, he declined to comment.
In addition to working on council, LeBlanc is now starting his own firm, LeBlanc Law.
“I’ll have a bit more flexibility to do the sort of work I want to do, which is similar to the work I’m doing on council, so representing every day … working-class folks for their legal needs,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to that next chapter.”
He said he has spoken with the law society and expects to be registered to practice this week.
