Regina Pats rookie Connor Bedard is set to wear the maple leaf.
The 15-year-old — the first player ever granted exceptional player status in the WHL — was named to the Canadian team that is to play in the upcoming IIHF under-18 world championship in Frisco, Texas. The tournament is set for April 26 to May 6.
It’s the first time in Bedard’s career that he has been named to a national team.
“I was pretty surprised,” Bedard said in a media release when asked about hearing the news Tuesday night. “I didn’t even know that the tournament was happening until the day before, so it was a shock and just excitement.
“I’ve never gotten the chance to play for my country and to be able to have that opportunity is just a dream come true for any hockey player growing up and wanting that opportunity. It’s super special.”
Sioux Falls Stampede forward Cole Sillinger (who hails from Regina) and Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Nolan Allan (Davidson) also made the team.
Bedard is the only 15-year-old on the Canadian roster. The team’s players are to self-isolate at home starting April 12, so Bedard’s last game with the Pats before the tournament is to be April 9 against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
“Even at the start of the season, we knew this was a possibility,” Pats general manager John Paddock said in the release. “As we’ve progressed through training camp and the start of the season, it became clear that Connor would be in the mix for a spot on Team Canada.
“We’re proud of his start here and looking forward to watching him represent the Pats at the U18 World Championship later this month.”
Bedard, a product of North Vancouver, B.C., took over the WHL scoring lead Tuesday with a goal and an assist against the Moose Jaw Warriors. He has 19 points, including nine goals, through 10 games.
Bedard joins Connor McDavid and John Tavares as the only “double underagers” ever to play on Canada’s under-18 team.
Tavares was 15 when he played in the 2006 tournament in Sweden. McDavid was 16 when he played in the 2013 event in Russia.
“It’s pretty cool when you hear your name with those guys,” Bedard said. “Those are two of the best players in the world and have both accomplished so much at the highest level possible. Knowing that is very special and super cool to be with those guys.”
