The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed their first pick in the 2021 CFL draft.
The Roughriders announced Friday they had signed University of Saskatchewan Huskies defensive back Nelson Lokombo, whom the Roughriders selected in the first round (second overall) of the May 4 draft.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Lokombo won the Presidents’ Trophy as the most outstanding defensive player in Canadian university football in 2019.
He had 39 tackles, six tackles for losses, three sacks, five interceptions (two of which he returned for touchdowns), four pass breakups and one forced fumble that sreason.
He also was named Canada West’s most outstanding defensive player, a Canada West all-star and a U Sports first-team all-Canadian that season.
The product of Abbotsford, B.C., was named the Huskies’ rookie of the year in 2017.
Lokombo is the third member of the Roughriders’ draft class to sign, joining defensive lineman Alain Cimankinda (fourth round, 35th overall) and offensive lineman Logan Bandy (fifth round, 38th overall).
