A 67-year-old man from the Star City area has been fined $15,000 after a number of deer were shot and killed near that town.
According to the Ministry of Environment, conservation officers in Melfort were called Jan. 7 about a dead deer that had been found on the driveway of a rural property west of Star City.
The officers investigated and found the bodies of 10 white-tailed deer on the land. The property owner was interviewed and admitted he had shot multiple deer between Jan. 1 and Jan. 6.
“He stated that he had shot the deer as they were causing damage to trees and shrubs on an adjacent property,” the ministry’s media release said. “The deer had all been shot at night as they came in to feed.”
On Jan. 10, officers got a second call in the same area and found two more dead white-tailed deer that had been shot.
The man recently pleaded guilty to offences including illegal hunting, waste of edible game, hunting within 500 metres of occupied buildings, hunting big game with a rimfire rifle, and night hunting. In addition to the fine, he also was handed a three-year hunting suspension.
The ministry noted the man never contacted the ministry to report deer had done damage to his property.
