Las Vegas is back to normal and, as of Sunday, so is Regina.
Greg Morgan spoke to Shanna Schulhauser — the director of communications with the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation — and she explained how the first day went at Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw with all COVID-19 restrictions lifted.
“There was certainly a feeling of excitement throughout the gaming floors when we opened for business,” Schulhauser said.
Effective at 9 a.m. on Sunday, both Casino Regina and Casino Moose Jaw implemented the Step Three changes under the Re-Opening Roadmap.
“It was just a bit easier to roll out from a logistical standpoint,” Schulhauser said.
At Casino Regina, those wishing to try their luck were lined up before the doors even opened, with many maskless.
“We had a lineup of about 30 to 35 people first thing that morning,” Schulhauser said. “About six or so of those individuals entered the casino with masks on.
“Of course, we had a bit of a mixed bag in terms of employees wearing masks as well. Some have elected to wear them while others didn’t, and of course employees and guests who do prefer to wear masks at our properties are still very welcome to do so.”
For the foreseeable future, Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw plan to do increased cleaning and sanitization on high-touch surfaces and on the gaming floor.
“That’s again just an extra precaution that we’ve got for guests and our employees to make sure that, you know, we’re keeping safety and health sort of top of mind,” Schulhauser said.
Aside from going maskless, guests can also look forward to new renovations.
As of Tuesday, the casino’s restaurant will be reopen with a brand new menu.
Renovations for the west end of the casino are ongoing and the Show Lounge is set to reopen around Nov. 1.
“While we don’t have any shows booked in that space just yet, we’re asking everyone to stay tuned for updates on our website and our social media channels in the coming weeks,” Schulhauser said.
“It was a tough year last year. (The) 2020-2021 (fiscal year) did see us having a bit of a net loss. Things are looking good in the next couple of weeks as we start to reopen things and get back to normal, (or) about as close to normal as we were sort of pre-pandemic.”
