Canada West to require proof of vaccination from athletes, coaches

Canada West’s board of directors has unanimously voted to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for the conference’s 2021-22 season.

All student-athletes, coaches, managers, medical staff, strength and conditioning coaches, event staff and officials who attend competitions will have to get a first dose of a COVID vaccine by next Thursday.

The conference said in a release that second doses will be required by Oct. 17 “in order to continue participation in university sport activity between Canada West member institutions.”

People who aren’t vaccinated under provincial human rights legislation are exempt from the Canada West policy, which also doesn’t supersede provincial or institutional policies that may be in place.

Athletes from the universities of Regina and Saskatchewan participate under the Canada West umbrella.
