The City of Regina is looking at building a new indoor pool facility where one already exists.
In a media release Thursday morning, the city said it was launching a feasibility study to examine the possibility of putting a new indoor pool on the site of the Lawson Aquatic Centre.
“We are excited to begin this work and explore how we can better serve the competitive and recreation needs of our community,” Mayor Sandra Masters said in the release.
“A new pool is a strategic investment in supporting a healthy, dynamic, and inclusive community where all residents have access to a better quality of life.”
The city’s release said the site of the Lawson Aquatic Centre on Elphinstone Street has been deemed the best location for a new pool, noting the study “will consider if and how the existing infrastructure fits into future plans.”
The study also will examine project timelines and costs, sustainability aspects and desired uses.
The city’s Recreational Master Plan previously said a new aquatics facility was a priority, addressing the need of aging infrastructure, the desire of residents for what the city called “contemporary spaces” and a growing need for year-round aquatic programming.
Community research and discussions with residents and community groups will be part of the study. That’s to begin with an online survey available to 40,000 randomly selected households in Regina.
Later in the fall, a second online survey will be accessible to anyone who wants to provide input.
