The Moose Jaw Police Service is warning residents after a number of people have reported receiving fraudulent phone calls.
The calls are coming from an individual claiming to have kidnapped a loved one. They instruct the family member to drive to a bank and wait for further instructions.
Police say on some occasions a child in distress could be heard in the background, which is believed to be a recording. The information about the loved one is believed to be obtained through social media.
Police are reminding the public to avoid posting personal information on social media, in particular family members’ names and phone numbers.
If you receive one of these calls, attempt to contact your loved one to confirm their safety. If you are unable to reach them, contact the Moose Jaw Police Service.
