The WHL returned from its holiday break Monday with dozens of players or staff sent to COVID-19 protocol.
A media release says a total of 36 WHL personnel were added to the protocol list as a result of either displaying COVID symptoms or returning a positive test.
The Spokane Chiefs and Victoria Royals each had four individuals test positive, while four of five Saskatchewan teams were affected.
The Saskatoon Blades have three in the protocol, while the Regina Pats saw two individuals put into the protocol.
The Moose Jaw Warriors and Swift Current Broncos had one individual each in the protocol.
The Prince Albert Raiders were the lone Saskatchewan WHL team unaffected.
“As per WHL Protocols, all individuals are required to complete a PCR test to confirm the rapid antigen positive test result. Players or hockey operations staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 are not permitted to resume team activities or come into close contact with teammates or club staff until they have returned a negative test result or completed the required isolation period,” the release from the league states.
Because there were so few positive cases, the WHL said there won’t be an impact on league scheduling at this time.
Due to WHL policy, the league won’t be providing further comment or identifying the affected individuals.
