He put his face at the front of the fight against cancer and John Hopkins isn’t ready to give up yet.
The Regina and District Chamber of Commerce announced on its website that the well-known CEO is taking a medical leave of absence.
“It is essential that we fully support John during his courageous battle against cancer,” said Collin Pullar, Chair of the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. “John has been a strong advocate for local business and the Regina community for over 20 years, it’s now time for us to be there for him.”
The statement on the website maintains John will be using his time away from the office to take advantage of medical care and to bravely continue his fight against stage-four prostate cancer
“It’s in my best interest that I take some time away from the office to focus on my health,” Hopkins said. “I am very proud of the many accomplishments and successes we shared together, including the wastewater treatment plant and the new Mosaic Stadium. Together, we have made a positive and lasting impact on the local economy and improved the quality of life for many Regina families.”
Hopkins has spoken publicly about his illness and continues to play in a band with former Mayor Michael Fougere and AGT Foods President Murad Al-Katib, with gigs raising money for cancer research.
“Through his dedication and tireless efforts as our CEO, John is known nationally as a community leader whose focus has been on making Regina a thriving city that is open for business,” said Lori Ireland, incoming Chair of the Chamber board of directors. “We all owe John our gratitude and thanks for his efforts and the entire organization will fully support him during his medical leave of absence.”
Hopkins celebrated 20 years as the Chamber’s CEO last year.
