From undefeated champions to roadside heroes, the men on the Briercrest volleyball team showed that they aren’t short for talent and big hearts after helping a local woman out of a snowy ditch last Friday.
Nigel Mullan, the coach of the volleyball team, and his wife, Natalie, were backing out of their driveway in Caronport when they saw a woman slide her car into a deep snow-filled ditch across the road.
“Nigel got out to go see if he could help her and the ditch was really deep so she was stuck pretty badly. So he knew that he needed extra manpower to be able to get her out,” Natalie said.
She said the woman who crashed got out of the car without being hurt.
After Nigel realized this was a job he couldn’t do alone, he sent a message to the volleyball team’s group chat and asked if any of the players were available to help him out.
“It was less than five minutes and the whole team showed up,” Natalie said.
With Nigel steering the vehicle, the team tried pushing it out … but it wasn’t budging. So then player Davis Borden left and brought back his truck. He hooked up the truck to the vehicle’s bumper and pulled it while the rest of the team pushed.
After a little bit of work, the team was successful and got the car out of the ditch.
“It was really sweet. The guys were all cheering and high-fiving and were so excited to be able to help out,” Natalie said.
