Stan Montgomery, a former chief of police and mayor of Moose Jaw, has died.
Montgomery made his living with the Moose Jaw Police Service from 1954 to 1988, retiring as police superintendent. He served as the mayor of the city from 1989 to 1991.
“Stan was a pillar of our community, a person who represented what was good about our city and our people,” Mayor Clive Tolley said. “I was fortunate to serve as a city councillor when Stan was our mayor and I know how much he cared for Moose Jaw.
“As a policeman, he was firm while empathetic. As a dedicated volunteer coach, he positively impacted the lives of our children. And he was a true family man. Stan leaves a legacy of family, friends, and accomplishments, and he will always be remembered as a true Moose Javian.”
Montgomery also left his mark on the sports community as a competitor and a coach, whether it was in the local curling rinks or on the baseball diamonds.
Many have fond memories of Montgomery, who coached and mentored hundreds of kids over the years.
The flags at Moose Jaw City Hall were lowered to half-mast in honour of the former mayor.
