The RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina is advancing its plans to become Canada’s newest national museum.
If it goes ahead, new exhibits would be installed to paint Canada’s history, whether it’s good or bad.
“From our vision, the proposed National RCMP Museum will be a place of celebration and discovery, but also reflection and reconciliation,” said Tara Robinson, the heritage centre’s CEO.
“We want it to be a place to listen, learn and build connections because we know there are proud chapters in the RCMP, which evoke a sense of national pride, but there are other chapters that are painful. We must acknowledge the struggles of the past.”
Right now, the museum is only from the RCMP perspective. Robinson wants that to change with many diverse perspectives looking at Canada’s history.
“There’s an intertwined history with many cultures in Canada and one of the longest and most revered is with Indigenous people,” Robinson said. “So reconciliation is going to be really, really important to us.
“We’re asking for perspectives and opinions to understand and explore the best ways to honour Canada’s past in this museum.”
Once established, the National RCMP Museum would be only the third of its kind established outside of the Ottawa area.
The heritage centre has until December to put a bid forward to the federal government to receive funding for the project.
“We would need to raise a certain percentage of funds and we are very eager to do that, but it would come with financial sustainability. It would come with national and international exposure and it would come with the creation of new jobs,” Robinson said.
“And it would come with a brand new museum inside. As we would build new exhibits, we would make sure that we are reflecting what Canadians want to see in a national RCMP museum.”
Robinson is hopeful people will speak out with their stories to make this a reality.
“Without the voices of people across Canada, we cannot appropriately reflect all the uniquely Canadian stories and perspectives this museum must share,” said Robinson. “The RCMP is a Canadian institution with deep roots in our history. Hearing from Canadians will ensure every chapter is represented.”
