A 24-year-old Pelican Lake man is facing firearms charges after allegedly firing a gun near an RCMP officer.
The RCMP said a police dog officer was investigating an abandoned car on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band side of Little Red River on Wednesday. The officer believed the car was stolen, but while the officer was investigating, they heard a gunshot nearby.
“The officer took cover and commanded the person responsible to stop firing shots. An individual then told the officer to leave the area,” the RCMP said in a statement. “The officer was not physically injured.”
More officers quickly arrived on the scene, the RCMP said, and the suspect, a man from Pelican Lake First Nation, was found in a nearby home and arrested. Police also found and seized a gun and ammunition.
The suspect is now charged with discharging a firearm recklessly, the RCMP said, as well as unsafe storage of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
“Investigation into the abandoned car, which was not connected to this incident, continues,” the RCMP said.
