Saskatchewan’s Teagan Littlechief is getting ready for the opportunity of a lifetime.
The award-winning singer and songwriter will be performing the national anthem at the Grey Cup on Sunday at Mosaic Stadium.
Littlechief said on Thursday’s Greg Morgan Morning Show that she can’t believe she’s getting the opportunity to sing on one of the country’s biggest stages.
“I’m still in shock. I’m still kind of freaking out,” she said. “Now that the day is getting closer, I’m thinking, ‘Oh my gosh!’ ”
Littlechief won an Indigenous Artist of the Year award in the country music category in 2022 and in the past has sung the national anthem for the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and WHL’s Regina Pats.
In 2015, her song “I’ll Bring the Party” reached No. 1 on the National Aboriginal Music Countdown.
She was presented with the opportunity after a friend got her a gig to perform the Canadian national anthem at Craven this past summer. After that, she says doors opened up.
“I didn’t realize the amount of work (her friend) was doing behind the scenes and it was actually about four weeks ago he let me know that I had got (the Grey Cup gig),” Littlechief said.
According to Littlechief, the anthem sung at the Grey Cup will be unique compared to others in the past.
“I will be singing it in French, English and Cree,” she said. “When I first got the anthem, they asked me to do the full thing in Cree, then I got a call asking if I could do it in English and French, and then I got a call saying, ‘Can you do it trilingual?’ So I said yes.”
While she was given the option to lip synch the anthem as is the case with some major events, Littlechief said the anthem will be completely live and raw.
Despite being someone who sings on stage all the time, Littlechief added she’ll be nervous when all eyes will be on her.
“I’ll be shaking in my boots,” she said.
Littlechief said she’ll be thinking about her son and her parents when she sings Sunday.
