Residents may be relieved to hear the plowing of Regina’s residential roads began Tuesday, and is slated to continue until Jan. 16.
The plowing is to occur every day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We have a lot of crews out on the street performing this work and it happens very quickly and we are on track to complete by the scheduled time,” Tyler Bien, the manager of winter maintenance with the City of Regina, said during a virtual conference call Tuesday.
“Granted, if we do get a snowfall in that period of time, the residential plow would be put on pause.”
Bien said 2022 brought far more snow than what the city normally prepares for.
“In a typical year, we plan for about four systematic plows and one full residential plow, which would be all the streets in the entire city,” Bien said. “In the calendar year of 2022, our crews completed upward of 12 full systematic plows, two residential plows and then a large amount of snow removal just based on the fact that we received so much snow throughout the year.”
Bien said the sheer number of storms the city experienced over the year contributed to a budget overexpenditure, which he said “was required to provide a safe driving surface and travel for the residents of this city.”
For the current operation, the city asked residents to move their cars off the road for the plows.
“When you move your car off the road, it allows our plow teams to be the most efficient and effective as we can,” Bien said.
“When they don’t have to go around parked vehicles, they can clear the road a lot better.”
Residents can find out when their street will be plowed by visiting the city’s website and typing in their address.
