Tips to Regina Crime Stoppers helped Regina police recover nearly four times more property, drugs and cash in 2022 than in the previous year.
According to figures released by Crime Stoppers on Thursday, police recovered $686,400 worth of property, drugs and cash last year. In 2021, the total was $173,060.
Police recovered $617,200 in property in 2022, up from $96,660 the year before. Investigators also seized $66,700 worth of drugs last year, up from $5,400 in 2021.
The total value of recoveries last year represents about 18 per cent of the $12.2 million recovered since the Crime Stoppers program began in 1984.
Despite the increase in the value of recoveries and seizures, the data released Thursday showed tips, arrests, cases cleared and charges laid were down in 2022.
There were 715 tips received in 2022, down from 888 the year before. Police arrested 24 individuals, a decrease from 52 in 2021. There were 35 cases cleared due to tips, down from 108 the previous year. And 44 charges were laid in 2022, down from 154 the year before.
Since its inception in 1984, Regina Crime Stoppers has received 25,405 tips that have led to 2,311 arrests and 4,172 cases being cleared.
There were 31 rewards approved for tipsters in 2022 for a total of $8,275, a slight decrease from $8,345 the year before.
“Regina Crime Stoppers may pay cash awards of up to $2,000 for information pertaining to any crime, which leads to the identity or arrest of individuals involved,” a media release said. “This also includes solving of a case and recovery of stolen property or illicit drugs.”
Only 11 of the 31 rewards approved in 2022 have been claimed to date. Those who provided tips are urged to contact Crime Stoppers to see if they’re eligible for a reward.
