Homes in east-central Regina are set to get new water meters.
The City of Regina said Thursday its Water Meter Upgrade Project is moving into Ward 6, which includes areas around Arcola Avenue, College Avenue, Park Street and Winnipeg Street.
The city said water utility customers in the area will get a letter introducing the project and a brochure that lays out how to schedule a meter upgrade appointment.
“The new meters will collect information about water use more frequently, enabling customers to manage and conserve water, as well as help detect leaks,” the city said in a release.
“The new water meter technology promotes environmental sustainability by eliminating the need for the meter reading vehicles that are currently used to collect drive-by meter reads. This will result in a community reduction of approximately 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.”
According to the city, more than 30 per cent of utility customers in Ward 7 have received their new meters. Work will continue in that area while the upgrades are started in Ward 6.
The release said more technicians will be added to the project “to achieve the timelines set out over this three-year project.” The project is expected to cost approximately $42.5 million.
