In a usual year, the underpasses near downtown Regina might flood once or twice, but this year they’ve flooded at least three times in the last two weeks alone.
The City of Regina has plans to fix this frustration for drivers but they’ll take a while to come to fruition.
“There’s a solution for the Albert Street underpass which will be co-ordinated in with the Saskatchewan Drive rehabilitation and revitalization,” Mayor Sandra Masters said on the Greg Morgan Morning Show.
However, the Saskatchewan Drive revitalization isn’t expected to begin until 2024.
In the meantime, the city is looking at installing lights or arms that will warn people that the Albert Street underpass is flooded before they drive into it.
The Winnipeg Street and Broad Street underpasses also flood during significant thunderstorms.
“The Broad Street underpass, we’re looking at a detention pond in the (rail)yards,” said Masters.
However, there wasn’t any word on when that work might happen.
