980 CJME and 650 CKOM were recognized with two prestigious Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) Prairie Region awards Thursday.
The Radio Television Digital News Association is made up of radio and TV newsrooms across Canada.
980 CJME won for Best Radio Newscast for coverage the morning after the capture and arrest of mass murder suspect Myles Sanderson.
It was an all-encompassing story, from the initial breaking news and eyewitnesses to our reporters on the scene with police and the ambulance, at the hospital and at evening vigils, to the final news conference at RCMP headquarters.
Kevin Martel anchored that comprehensive coverage, which also included the initial report that the Queen was being attended to by doctors.
650 CKOM won for Feature News, with reporter Libby Giesbrecht’s exploration of Saskatoon’s only Indigenous language school. That feature can be heard here.
The regional winners go forward for national contention at the RTDNA Gala in October.
