Areas around Swift Current and Moose Jaw could be starting the Canada Day long weekend with a boom.
Severe thunderstorm watches went into effect Friday for parts of southern Saskatchewan, including Assiniboia, Cabri, Central Butte, Coronach, Craik, Gravelbourg, Kyle, Lucky Lake, Moose Jaw, Pense and Swift Current.
Just before 3 p.m., Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm warnings for areas around Ponteix, Aneroid, Cadillac, Admiral, Mankota and Val Marie.
According to the weather service, severe thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts, toonie-sized hail and heavy rain are in the area.
Watches mean conditions are right for severe storms to develop. Warnings are issued if storms develop or are imminent.
