The City of Regina says its water meter upgrade project is flowing smoothly.
So far, the city said, more than 10,000 meters have been upgraded in wards 5, 6 and 7. Now, the project is moving into Ward 4 in the city’s southeast.
“The city is proactively addressing the aging water meter infrastructure as most of the current meters near the end of their lifecycle,” a media release said. “This presents a unique opportunity to introduce a more efficient and advanced meter reading system that will enhance the service experience for Regina’s utility customers.”
Customers in Ward 4 are to get a letter from the city explaining the project and then a brochure telling them how to schedule a meter upgrade appointment. Those brochures are to be sent out over the next two to three months, the city said.
Later this year, a new online service is to be introduced that will allow customers to see their account information and their household water usage, and get timely water meter reads. The service also will feature electronic notifications about planned water outages and consumption alerts for high water usage.
The city said the changes are expected to reduce community CO2 emissions by an estimated 10 tonnes per year since vehicles won’t be needed for drive-by meter reads.
