Saskatchewan news outlets face discouraging messages for many social media users this week.
In response to the passing of Bill C-18 in June, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is withholding links shared by news organizations from social media audiences.
Posts to the 980 CJME Facebook page, which has 22,000 followers, were no longer visible to many users Wednesday.
Other Rawlco pages with blocked content include the Green Zone and 650 CKOM.
A message appears on these pages that reads “People in Canada can’t see this content. In response to Canadian government legislation, news content can’t be viewed in Canada.”
The rollout of the blockage is expected to extend to all Canadian users, a strategic move by Meta to avoid paying media outlets for hosting news content on their platforms.
