The Regina Pats have signed the son of a former NHL goaltender to tend their goal.
The WHL team announced Tuesday it had signed 18-year-old goalie Ewan Huet, whose dad, Cristobal, played in the NHL from 2002 to 2010. The elder Huet had stints with the Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks during his career.
Regina selected the younger Huet with the 36th pick in the 2023 CHL import draft. He played for Lausanne in Switzerland’s under-20 league last season, posting a 14-12-2 record with a 2.73 goals-against average and two shutouts.
He played for Switzerland’s under-16, under-17 and under-18 teams. At the 2022 under-18 world championship, he went 2-2-0 record with a 2.50 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.
“We are pleased that Ewan and his family have committed to the Pats and the WHL,” Alan Millar, the Pats’ vice-president of hockey operations and general manager, said in a media release. “I had the opportunity to see Ewan play at the IIHF U-18 world championship in April, and he is an athletic, competitive goaltender, and will be a valuable addition to our team.”
Huet is to attend Switzerland’s national junior selection camp later this month before joining the Pats at training camp.
