Smoky weather in Saskatchewan is expected to improve throughout the week, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Dan Fulton, a meteorologist with ECCC, said the smoke covering the province is mainly coming from the wildfires in B.C. and the Northwest Territories, and due to current wind patterns over the weekend, almost all of Saskatchewan has been blanketed in smoke.
On Monday, all of Saskatchewan was under air quality advisories because of the smoke. Throughout the province there is between a one- and three-mile visibility due to smoke, Fulton said.
“There’s not super-heavy concentrations in one spot, but it’s really quite impressive the amount of smoke (that’s) across the province,” he said.
Fulton said people avoid being outside if possible, and recommends staying in an air-conditioned and filtered environment.
“The good news is that there’s a ridge of high pressure that’s going to build in tonight, and that should dissipate the smoke somewhat,” Fulton said on Monday.
Fulton predicts some of the smoke will clear on Tuesday, although the weather will still be hazy.
“It might come back Wednesday, as there’s kind of a return flow around the ridge … but it doesn’t look like it should be as bad as it is now,” he said.
Fulton said smoky weather is still expected to hit Saskatchewan a few more times throughout the month of September.
