After an alleged shooting on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation prompted a provincial emergency alert last week, both suspects are now facing charges.
On Thursday, police received a report of a shooting outside a home on the Cree nation, which is located about 100 kilometres north of Prince Albert, and responding officers found a man with serious injuries outside a home.
“Investigation determined that there was an altercation between the victim and two other males,” the RCMP said in a statement. “A firearm was discharged and the male was injured.”
An emergency alert was issued, warning people in the area to take shelter inside with doors and windows locked.
Police said 27-year-old Deon Smith was arrested at a local home Thursday, while 29-year-old Justice Bird was taken into custody at a residence north of the community the following day.
The RCMP said the men — both residents of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation — are now facing charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and discharging a firearm with intent.
The duo appeared in a Prince Albert courtroom on Monday, police said.
