A speeding semi led to a massive seizure of illegal cigarettes for RCMP officers in Swift Current last week.
According to the RCMP, officers from the Swift Current Rural detachment spotted the speeding truck on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gull Lake on Thursday at around 1 p.m.
“Further investigation determined the semi was hauling illegal tobacco products,” the Mounties said in a statement.

The driver was arrested, police said, and officers executed a search warrant on the semi, which led them to seize “approximately 42,000 cartons of illegal cigarettes.”
Police said the driver, a 46-year-old man from Aldergrove, B.C., is facing one count each of possession of unstamped tobacco, possession of unstamped tobacco products and possession of unmarked tobacco. He’s scheduled to appear in a Swift Current courtroom early in 2024.
