Two Regina schools were put into “secure the building mode” Thursday after two weapons calls.
In a media release, Regina police say school resource officers (SROs) were called around 2 p.m., to a school in the 1900 block of Second Avenue North for a report that a 12-year-old girl had been bear sprayed.
Police say the girl was in the playground area of the school when she was approached by two girls who sprayed her before running off.
The release didn’t identify the school, but the address corresponds with Mother Teresa Middle School.
According to police, the suspects were seen a short time later at a school in the 200 block of Broad Street. The release didn’t name that institution either, but Imperial Community School is in that block.
“Witnesses told police that one of the suspects had a firearm,” the release said. “When officers arrived at the school, the suspects fled. A short foot pursuit, involving SROs, Patrol and the Canine Unit, took place and the two were taken into custody.
“Due to the serious nature of the call for service and the presence of weapons, a police dog was used in the arrest. One of the suspects was treated for a dog-bite injury.”
Police said the schools were put into “secure the building mode” for a brief time, but that advisory subsequently was lifted.
The police release didn’t provide any details about charges.
Anyone with information that could help the police investigation was asked to call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
