Two female youths are facing charges following incidents that occurred at two Regina elementary schools on Thursday.
School resource officers were called to a school in the 1900 block of 2nd Avenue North for a report of a bear spray incident, according to a release from the Regina Police Service.
A 12-year-old girl in the playground area was allegedly approached by two female suspects, ages 12 and 13, who sprayed her and other people with bear spray.
The suspects left and were then seen at a school on the 200 block of Broad Street, where witnesses told police one of the suspects had a firearm.
When police arrived on scene, the two suspects fled but were arrested after a short pursuit on foot.
Officers found bear spray and a machete when they searched one of the suspects.
Due to what police are calling the “serious nature” of the call for service, a police dog was used in the arrest. One of the girls was treated for a dog bite injury.
As a result of the investigation, both female suspects, who cannot be named, are facing charges.
The 12-year-old is scheduled to make her first appearance in Regina Youth Provincial court on Jan. 29, 2024. The 13-year-old will follow with her first appearance on Feb. 1, 2024.
