A new school for the ever-expanding Harbour Landing neighbourhood has passed another milestone.
The Saskatchewan government announced Thursday it has signed a servicing agreement with the City of Regina for the new joint-use school, where some 850 students from kindergarten to Grade 8 will be educated starting in 2026.
The agreement means tendering for the installation of services can begin, which is likely to happen in February. The search for a company to build the school is expected to begin in the summer.
“Schools are a hub of every Saskatchewan community and the new Harbour Landing joint-use school facility will serve families who live in the area for decades into the future,” Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said in a release. “We are excited to work on this project with our partners, the City of Regina, Regina Public Schools and Regina Catholic Schools.”
The two schools in the area — Harbour Landing School on the public side and St. Kateri Tekakwitha School of the Catholic school division — are bursting at the seams.
The schools opened in 2017 and immediately were at, or near, their capacity. The public side, for example, was built for 650 students, but projections have said the population will hit 1,500 by 2027.
In 2020, the province added funding for a new school in the budget, but the project stalled.
A memorandum of understanding signed last year said the city will be responsible for acquiring the land for the new school, and will share servicing costs with the provincial government. But the two levels of government and developers went back and forth on the specifics.
The new joint-use school facility will be built on 11 acres of land at the corner of Gordon Road and Campbell Street. It’s to hold up to 500 students on the public side and up to 350 students on the Catholic side, with plans to also include a child-care centre.
The province’s release said the design phase is well underway.
“This is another exciting step forward in the progress of a new school,” Catholic division board chair Shauna Weninger said in the release. “It is a blessing to be closer to welcoming new families to the Harbour Landing area knowing additional learning space is on the way.
“We are grateful to have the servicing agreement in place to provide safety and convenience to all students, staff and community members when we open our new school doors in just a few short years.”
“We continue to see growth and increased need for additional educational and community spaces in the Harbour Landing neighbourhood,” added Sarah Cummings Truszkowski, chair of the public school board. “Families and especially parents in the neighbourhood will be pleased to see that significant progress toward the planning of a new school building is well underway.”
