The Cathedral Village Arts Festival needs a helping hand.
The festival is struggling due to the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a lower number of sponsorships, the reduction of grants, and the effects of inflation on the costs of venue bookings and stage rentals.
Every show and event put on during the Cathedral Village Arts Festival is free to the public, but in doing that, the majority of the festival’s money must be raised through fundraising.
As a result, the organization is holding Taste of Cathedral on Saturday. It’s an evening when participants can sample a variety of different menus offered by a selection of Cathedral restaurants, cafes, and shops.
“They’ll be serving up tastings of some of their food-type items, such as Blanco Cantina’s garlic mushroom tacos, jerk chicken from Auntie Maggie’s Caribbean Meals, the famous Dole whip from Elle’s Café, and on and on,” Linda Rattray, the co-ordinator for Taste of Cathedral, said on Friday’s Greg Morgan Morning Show.
The restaurants and businesses expected to participate in this year’s Taste of Cathedral are the 13th Avenue Food & Coffee House, Auntie Maggie’s Caribbean Meals, Blanco Cantina, Canadian Italian Club, Cuppa T Specialty Fine Teas, Elle’s Café, Fiesta Filipino, Shannon’s Pub & Grill, and Sinfully Sweet Cathedral Bakery.
In addition to the tastings, there will also be a silent auction held along with live music.
Rattray said one of the items at the event’s silent auction will be a jersey signed by former Regina Pats star Connor Bedard, along with a hockey card of his and a picture of him signing the jersey. Bedard was the first pick overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL draft.
“We have this very kind soul who works in our building, and he donated this jersey even after he stood in line for five hours to get the signature,” said Rattray.
Tickets for this year’s event are $25 and can be found on Eventbrite or at Dessart Sweets on 13th Avenue if paying with cash or cheque. Tasting tickets are $1 each.
Taste of Cathedral will be held at the Canadian Italian Club on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Rattray said the fundraiser is hoping to raise a total of $10,000.
