A fight on Monday at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary left one man dead, another badly hurt, and six people facing murder charges.
According to the RCMP, officers were called to the federal prison in Prince Albert at around 10 p.m. on Monday for a report of a sudden death and an injured person.
“The initial investigation determined an altercation occurred between a group of inmates,” the RCMP said in a statement.
The deceased inmate was identified as 29-year-old Rocky Meechance, and police said his next of kin has been notified of his death.

A second inmate was taken to hospital with serious injuries, the Mounties added.
After an investigation by the RCMP, six inmates – 26-year-old Dominick Cochrane, 26-year-old Wyatt Crookedneck, 28-year-old George Custer, 26-year-old Rene Merasty, 25-year-old Tyrel Munroe and 26-year-old Jonathan Soosay – are now facing charges of second-degree murder.
Three other inmates are facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Court dates are pending for the inmates facing charges, the RCMP said, and the incident is still under investigation.
