To date, more than 40,000 meters have been installed throughout Regina, the city said in a release. The new meters collect water use information, which allows customers to manage and conserve water and to detect leaks.
The city started replacing water meters in homes and businesses in October of 2022. The project is expected to be done by the spring of 2025.
“Soon, customers will be able to access a new online customer experience system,” the release said. “This system will allow customers to access account information, view and understand their household water use, and benefit from electronic notifications about planned water outages and consumption alerts for high water use, saving customers water and money.”
The city claimed the project will help reduce emissions, as meter-reading vehicles that emit carbon dioxide during drive-by meter reads will no longer be required. The city said the system is expected to reduce community CO2 emissions by an estimated 10 tonnes per year.
