Rachel Homan is on top of the curling world.
Homan and her Canadian team of Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes downed Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 7-5 on Sunday to win the world women’s curling championship in Sydney, N.S.
It’s Homan’s second world women’s title; she also won gold in 2017.
The victory in Sydney gave Canada its first title at the world women’s championship since 2018. Switzerland had won the past four world titles, with the 2020 event cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Sydney, Homan’s squad went 11-1 in the round-robin before defeating South Korea 9-7 in a semifinal Saturday.
In the final, the teams were tied 4-4 after five ends. After blanks in each of the sixth and seventh ends, Tirinzoni was forced to take one in the eighth for a 5-4 lead.
Homan responded with a three in the ninth after brilliantly splitting a guard into the rings with her final stone. The Canadians then ran the Swiss out of rocks in the 10th to win Canada’s 18th world women’s title.
Homan claimed the Canadian crown with a dominant performance at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary. Representing Ontario, Homan and her teammates won all 11 of their games at the Canadian championship.
