A lone RCMP cruiser sat in the approach of a farmyard near Neudorf on Tuesday, guarding the area where four people were found dead.
People sitting down for coffee in the community 135 kilometres east of Regina were shocked and terrified after they heard the news that four community members were found dead.
Amy and Alexander Bryce first heard the news of the deaths when it flashed across their TV screen.
“Like I said to my husband when he read the scroll on the news, I thought, ‘Neudorf. That’s got to be Neudorf, Germany, not Neudorf, Saskatchewan,’ ” said Amy. “(It’s) shocking.”
According to the RCMP, officers were conducting a wellness check Sunday night at the house, and found four adults dead inside.
Police said the deaths were considered suspicious, but an initial investigation indicated there wasn’t a risk to public safety.
In an update Tuesday, the RCMP said the initial investigation has led them to believe that the deceased are of the same family, made up of two parents and two of their children. The RCMP isn’t releasing their names yet, but said their next of kin have been notified.
“The Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service has transported the deceased to Regina, where autopsies are scheduled to take place this week,” the Mounties said in a news release.
Major Crimes officers have taken over the investigation with the help of the provincial coroner’s office.

I just spoke to a couple who retired in the community. They say they thought this happened in Neudorf, Germany, not Neudorf, Saskatchewan. @CJMENews @CKOMNews pic.twitter.com/1PnoQsqmoB

The Bryces retired to Neudorf, and have only been a part of the community for several months.
“We came from Mission,” Alexander said. “There’s a lot of stuff (that) goes on in Mission, B.C. … but here, we’ve got lovely neighbours and we all say hi, but that’s it.
“But we were shocked – quite shaken, actually.”
The retired pair didn’t know anyone who died until Alexander saw it on the TV.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Bryce. “I had to sit until it came back on because you just don’t expect something like that. Then you think, ‘What’s the reason? What happened?’ Then eventually we heard on Google or something what it was.”
Earlier Tuesday morning, the community started coffee for the early crowd at the Neudorf rink. Several people met to try figure out what happened at the rural location.
One woman said the situation could have been narrowed down to two words: No good.

Chris Chick lives a community over in Lemberg and was at the Neudorf Cafe.
“It’s pretty shocking. You don’t expect to hear this kind of thing in a small town like this,” he said. “There’s problems all over, but it’s pretty shocking when it hits home like this.”
Chick heard the news from other community members who said they were talking about the deaths when the RCMP announced them.
The Neudorf Town Office said Mayor Chad Kohlenberg was not available for comment. 980 CJME requested a comment from the Rural Municipality of McLeod, but didn’t receive a response by the time of publication.
