Rolling rights on reds are about to get expensive at one Regina intersection.
As the city announced in late January, $230 tickets will be issued starting Monday to drivers who don’t stop at a red light before turning right at the intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive.
That intersection is one of three in the city that has a safety camera.
Warnings will still be issued to offenders at the two other safety camera locations in the city — the intersections of Albert Street and Parliament Avenue, and Albert and Saskatchewan Drive.
However, drivers will be ticketed for running a red light at all three intersections.
The city said the expansion of its Red Light Safety Program expansion is designed “to help change driver behaviour, improve pedestrian safety and reduce right turn collisions.”
“There were 170 collisions in 2023 involving pedestrians and vehicles in our city, seven of which, tragically, resulted in fatalities,” Sgt. Shannon Gordon of the Regina Police Service Traffic Unit said in an earlier release.
“Drivers can do their part to keep our roads safe by coming to a complete stop at all red lights and stop signs. One way to encourage that behaviour is through the Red Light Safety Program.”
The city said an SGI evaluation report has determined that the program has helped reduce collisions at most camera locations.
