The government said the volume of exports to Algeria increased by more than 69 per cent, to 1,232,110 tonnes. That was the third-largest increase in volume among Saskatchewan’s top export markets last year.
Algeria is Saskatchewan’s fourth-leading export market by volume, with commodities like durum and lentils leading the way.
Exports to Indonesia rose by more than 62 per cent in volume, with the country becoming Saskatchewan’s sixth-leading agri-food export market in 2023. The top commodity exported to Indonesia by Saskatchewan is non-durum wheat.
The province’s agri-food exports to Morocco rose to 745,339 tonnes, a year-over-year increase of 22 per cent. Morocco is currently Saskatchewan’s eighth-leading export partner, with durum and lentils as its top imports from the province.
“The increase in exports to important international markets like Algeria, Indonesia and Morocco are yet another example of our agriculture sector’s resiliency and dedication to providing reliable, high-quality agri-food products worldwide,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said in the release.
“Numbers like these showcase the success we are seeing through our presence in world markets and building key relationships with our partners across the globe.”
The release said Saskatchewan has already surpassed its 2030 Growth Plan target of $20 billion in agri-food exports, with total shipments of $20.2 billion for 2023. Saskatchewan’s agri-food exports increased by more than 26 per cent by volume from 2022 to ’23.
