Just before the first payment of the new fiscal year is set to go out, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is confirming that people in Saskatchewan will still get the carbon tax rebate, now called the Canada Carbon Rebate.
However, the timing could be different depending on when a person filed their taxes.
For people who filed their 2023 tax return before March 15 this year, they will get the rebate on Monday as scheduled, according to a statement from the CRA. But those who filed after March 15 will have to wait six to eight weeks after their return was assessed.
That’s the reason some people might have been seeing $0 CCR show up on their online CRA account for April 15.
The question of Saskatchewan residents’ rebates has been bouncing around since the province announced it would no longer be charging the carbon tax for home heating.
Premier Scott Moe made the announcement after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the carbon tax would no longer be charged on heating oil, which is more widely used in Atlantic Canada than in Saskatchewan.
According to an announcement earlier this week, a family of four in Saskatchewan can expect to get $376 quarterly from the rebate, which is the same amount that was announced by the federal government in February when the amounts for the 2024-25 rebates were first announced, and before the Government of Saskatchewan confirmed it would not be remitting the carbon tax from home heating to the federal government.
