Confusion reigned in Oxbow on Thursday as RCMP officers descended on the southeastern Saskatchewan town without an immediate explanation as to why.
A number of RCMP vehicles were seen in the community and 980 CJME sent a reporter to the town after hearing from multiple sources that a body had been found.
Just before 5:30 p.m., the RCMP sent out a media release saying officers had received a report of a potential murder and an investigation was underway.
The town’s landfill was closed, and police said they had searched it as part of their investigation. But human remains weren’t found during that search.
The investigation continued and, at around noon, the body of a woman was found in a rural location in the Rural Municipality of Moose Mountain.
“Investigators do not believe there are any additional victims,” the police release said. “The identity of the female will be confirmed in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. Her death is a homicide.”
John Hutfloetz has lived in Oxbow for many years. He said the town has never seen a crime this severe.
“I mean why would you kill somebody? Anyway I was kind of upset about it,” he said.
He said many people were shaken by the news.
He says he hopes any guilty parties are punished to the full extent of the law.
The Mounties said their investigation led to the arrest of 27-year-old Tyler Shaw from Gainsborough, who was charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He’s to appear in Regina Provincial Court on Friday.
Police said a second man was taken into custody in Oxbow on Thursday afternoon, but the release didn’t provide his identity or say what if any charges he faced.
The RCMP noted there could be an increased police presence on the White Bear First Nation, in the RM of Moose Mountain and in Oxbow as the investigation continues.
“We would like to acknowledge we received media inquiries about this investigation, including requests to confirm we located human remains before we did, and to confirm we were investigating a homicide before our investigators gathered the evidence to confirm it,” the release said.
“It’s important for the public to understand that there are situations where we must temporarily hold back information to maintain the integrity of an investigation and to ultimately work to seek justice for victims of crime. Generally speaking, whenever possible we also prioritize ensuring a victim’s loved ones are updated and provided support before publicly releasing information about their injury or death.”
