Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating a shooting in Regina.
The oversight group is investigating what police called a “serious incident which occurred (Sunday) afternoon in the 1100 block of Garry Street.”
Police shared very few details, other than to say the incident in the Rosemont-Mount Royal neighbourhood involved the police force’s SWAT team, and that police had requested the investigation.
“We understand that this incident is of significant public interest and ask for patience as we gather the facts,” the Regina Police Service said in a statement. “Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
The Serious Incident Response Team – a civilian-led organization that investigates serious incidents involving police officers – described the incident as an “officer-involved shooting,” and asked the public for assistance.
“SIRT is asking that anyone who directly witnessed or has video of the (Regina police) officer-involved shooting yesterday on the 1100 block of Garry Street to please contact SIRT at sirt@gov.sk.ca to be contacted by an investigator,” the organization wrote on social media.
Meanwhile, SIRT is also investigating a separate incident from April 26 when a member of Regina’s SWAT team was shot by another police officer, leaving him seriously injured. Police have repeatedly characterized the shooting as accidental, but the oversight organization has not yet released its report.
