Edmonton Oilers fans across Canada are showcasing their fandom as the team heads into Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.
On Saturday, ahead of Game 1 against the Florida Panthers, Fishing Lake, Sask. resident Rod Zwarych was working in his yard when he decided to carve a giant Oilers logo into the grass.
“I kind of stole the idea. A friend of mine sent me a picture of somebody in I assume Edmonton who had done it and he said you should do this on your lawn. My lawn just happened to be the right length – so I thought I’m a big Oilers fan so I’m going to show what kind of fan I am,” he explained.

Zwarych, who has been an Oilers fan since the Gretzky days in the 1980s, said carving the logo into his lawn took about three hours.
Since he unveiled his creation on Saturday afternoon, the project has been grabbing people’s attention as they head into the community of Fishing Lake, located approximately 250 kilometres east of Saskatoon.
“I’ve (had) some good reactions from family, friends and even strangers driving by. There were two ladies from Edmonton that actually stopped and were taking pictures,” he said.
Zwarych said he had to cut the grass a little last night and thought it would mean the logo would be a little tough to see. However, the logo now stands out better than before.
He’s hopeful the logo can give the team some luck heading into Game 2.
Zwarych said this is the first time he’s ever done something like this and suggested lawn art could become his new hobby.
“I’ve already been thinking I should do other carvings too,” he said. “As time goes on there might be something else I want to display.”
He added seeing the Oilers win the Stanley Cup would mean a lot to him.
“It’s me and a lot of people. It would mean a lot to most Canadians, that’s for sure – unless you’re a die-hard Vancouver fan – then you’re probably cheering against the Oilers right now,” he joked.
The Oilers play the Panthers tonight in Sunrise, FL, for Game 2 of the series. The Panthers lead the best-of-seven 1-0.
