It’s been raining cats and dogs in parts of Saskatchewan for the last couple of weeks, and farmers are loving it.
Canada’s Farm Show was in Regina this week, and it brought farmers from all over the province into the Queen City. The one sentiment they shared was that they love the rain and want more of it.
Dale Schwab has a cattle farm west of Assiniboia. He was happy with the amount of rain his area has seen in the past of weeks.
“Finally!” Schwab exclaimed. “We’ve been five years of drought… This is the first year we finally have some rain.”
“Just let (the rain) keep coming. After five years of nothing, we need more,” said Schwab. “Especially for the grass with cattle… it’s good to see.”
Randy Genert, a farmer in southwest Saskatchewan, shared Schwab’s sentiments about the rain. “It’s been awesome,” he said. “We haven’t seen quite as much rain in June, but we had a wet May… In a perfect world, it rains during the week and is nice on the weekends, and you make everybody happy.”
Retired farmer Brian Geres said the perfect weather for farmers is “rain before seeding, and then a few timely rains after seeding, no rain in harvest, and then rain in the fall again.”
Geres said the last few years haven’t been ideal. “It’s been dryer than normal, and this year is closer to normal.”
According to Environment Canada, the rain is expected to let up, and the sun should make an appearance for the weekend in the Regina area.
