A safety advisor with the University of Regina says the fire department showed up to the Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport on Saturday after a low-oxygen alarm went off in the building’s chlorine room.
The Regina Fire Department said it responded to a high-risk hazmat situation at 3925 Golden Rod Loop at the university at 4:15 p.m.
Doug Schmidt, the university’s health, safety, and emergency management advisor, said when the system detected something wrong, it triggered the call to the fire department.

“Everything worked as designed,” he said. “We have good people and good procedures in place to ensure the campus is where it needs to be.”
Schmidt said firefighters arrived at the building and shut off the chlorine system, and no injuries were reported.
As a safety precaution, the Kinesiology Building was evacuated, he noted. The building has since been reopened.
Schmidt said he doesn’t know if any repairs need to be made yet, but workers are looking into it.
“We had people in all weekend long taking a look at the system,” he said. “But it’s anticipated (the pool) will be open this week if everything goes as planned.”
